But 44 years ago this was extremely unusual. But it's what I did. From 1945 until 1947 I was radio officer on board a merchant ship. In that function I was sent to Indonesia, then still the Dutch East Indies, to transport goods between the islands of that vast archipelago. But in early 1947 I grew bored with my job and requested a transfer. That request changed my life, for on the ship back to Holland were some attractive girls which I, as a bachelor, couldn't resist courting. Virtually all passengers on the ship, the Sibayak, were repatriates who had spent more than three years in Japanese prisons, either jails or con- verted convents and schools, sur- rounded by high fences — males in separate prisons from females. It was the reverse of what Canada did to citi- zens of Japanese ancestry, only many times worse. One day after leaving Djakarta I saw two girls leaning over the railing watching the waters of Strait Sunda with the infamous Mount Krakatoa in the distance. One of them was blonde. After all the black haired Indonesians it was refreshing to see bright blonde tresses once again. I leaned over beside her and began, what was likely an inane conversation. To impress them I wore my tropical uniform which, I later found out, backfired. These girls had seen only uniformed men in the prison guards for the last three years and wanted nothing more than to forget them. They soon turned away from me. But I persisted and a romance blossomed between Toni and I. When we arrived in Rotterdam her aunts declared it likely a shipboard romance and that she wouldn't see me anymore. How wrong they were. We have been married since 1948 and produced three children. 1 11
