elegance.
Bridal couple plans
simply elegant
wedding reception
Trying to come up with a unique
wedding idea that doesn't break too
far from tradition or break the budget
is not always easy. For many, the idea
of planning a mega -affair appeals to
neither their tastes, nor their lifestyle.
Ruth Johnston of Listowel, is an
open, friendly girl without pretense.
When she and her husband Bill decid-
ed to many, they agreed the wedding
and the celebration following, would
not be elaborate. "We knew we didn't
want the traditional huge event, We
wanted something simple, but special.
Not what everyone else has," she said.
The couple decided on a small
church wedding to be held in Listowel
on June 29, 1991, then began to look
around for ideas for the wedding
reception. With Ruth working full-
time in the trauma unit at Victoria
Hospital in London, she was also hop-
ing to be relieved of a great deal of the
pre -planning burden. Their search
eventually led them to the Waterloo
Motor Inn where they met with a co-
ordinator who outlined the establish-
ment's services and prices to them.
The Johnstons booked the indoor pool
area as well as a second room for din-
ner and speeches. "We discussed the
fine details, such as wine selection
and choices for the meal and they han-
dled everything," said Ruth. "It would
have been so difficult for me, having
to drive back and forth from London.
This way, I simply spoke with them a
few times and I knew everything was
looked after."
The Motor Inn put them in touch
with a Cambridge company that came
in and decorated the reception area, so
that was one less detail for the bride
and groom to concern themselves
with.
On the day of the wedding, as the
bridal party gathered at the Listowel
Park for photographs, the 100 guests
made their way to Waterloo, where
they relaxed around the pool, enjoying
hors d'oeuvres and cocktails, prior to
the wedding feast.
Ruth's mother, Wanda Bridge, said
the banquet was sumptuous fare and
everyone was overwhelmed by the
abundance and variety. "We received
a lot of compliments," she said.
After dinner was served, during the
speeches, many of the younger chil-
dren, who usually find the formalities
somewhat tedious, were able to
relieve the boredom by enjoying a
swim, Ruth explained.
Cost -wise, Ruth and her mother
agree that the hassle -free reception
was a good deal there as well. "We
had an open bar for the guests, yet, 1
don't imagine the overall cost was any
higher, maybe even less, than it would
have been for a typical reception,"
said Wanda.
"From the beginning, it was all
meant to be very relaxed," Ruth said.
"It worked out perfectly; the entire
day went without a hitch. I don't
regret any part of it and I was very,
very pleased with the way it turned
out."
