spot, it is too costly for them to work
that way. It is a hobby first, one that
they enjoy and one they don't want to
get any bigger. "We like being able to
do the work ourselves," said Bill.
Though Bill makes many things
from wood, his toys are showpieces,
charmingly nostalgic in their beauty.
Rocking horses, barns, doll carriages,
and wagons have the sturdy appeal of
toys of yesteryear, replicating quality
workmanship not easily found in
modern toy stores. The wooden toys
created by the Landons are not made
of flimsy veneer, but of solid, rich
woods, like oak, pine and cherry. As
well, it is apparent that they are creat-
ed by a man who takes pride in what
he does, who adds the little extra fin-
ishing touches that make his product
special. The wheels he uses on his
wagons are costly, about $60, but they
are made to last. His barns, with slid-
ing doors and a sloping gangplank
inspire childhood imagination and are
strong enough to outlive childhood
exuberance. That is not to say that his
work appeals only to youth. Bill has
