Townsman, 1991-09, Page 4The joys of autumn
How quickly time flies. This issue marks the second
anniversary of the first issue of Townsman back in the
fall of 1989. It's been a tough time to start a magazine
but we thank those loyal readers who have let us know
they appreciate Townsman and we'll hope to keep you
entertained and informed again this issue.
The coming of September heralds one of the most
breath -takingly beautiful times of the year in western
Ontario. Perhaps it's our reward to the mountains of
snow we can usually expect in the winter months
ahead but Fall in our region offers beauty that few
other areas of the world can offer. The air is cooler,
the bugs are gone, there's a haze on the hills and an
ache of melancholy that another summer is almost
over. And, of course, there's the colour of millions of
trees.
In this issue we offer a few suggestions of places
you could visit to get out in the country and enjoy the
beauty.
There's beauty of another kind in the haunting voice
of Stratford's Loreena McKennitt. Bonnie Gropp
interviewed the singer as she prepared for a series of
concerts to promote her new album.
Western Ontario has become used to being close to
those in power. The area had two cabinet ministers
and the Speaker of the House in the former Liberal
government and now has the Minister of Culture and
Communications in Karen Haslam of Perth and
Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture in
Paul Klopp in Huron. The one survivor of the NDP
sweep of last September is Bruce M.P.P. Murray
Elston who has recently been named the interim
leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. It's been a long
climb for the boy who studied in a one -room school
house in Morris Township. Jim Fitzgerald talked to Mr.
Elston for an article this month.
We welcome new restaurant reviewers this issue
and Duncan McGregor and Lynda Lentz take over the
duties from James and Anne Roy. For this issue they
visited the Admiral Bayfield in Bayfield.
Sheila Richards, our Country Cook spent part of
her summer in Quebec and brought a taste of Quebec
with her. She reveals some Quebec recipes in her
column.
We hope you'll enjoy this issue.
Share your recipes
Our next issue will celebrate the Christmas season
and we're looking forward again this year to passing
on some Christmas joy through recipes. If you have a
special Christmas recipe you'd like to share, we'd be
glad to receive it. We need recipes by Oct. 23 for
inclusion.
Correction
In our story on Milverton last issue we incorrectly
stated that Anne Brailsford -Child was president of the
Milverton Business Association before becoming
involved in the Milverton-Mornington Revitalization
Committee. She was involved with the Business
Association but not as President.
