After Doris married, she moved with
her husband to a farm one concession

her mother, she returned once more to
the place she "has always considered
home". A lover of antiques before she
even understood the potential value,
Doris's collection has enhanced the
old-fashioned simplicity of her coun-
try home.
The house, still a haven for many, is
often bursting its hinges as family
gatherings arrive in honour of special
occasions or simply to visit. Doris has
always loved to entertain, but last
year, after retiring from her job as
owner and operator of Hillside Nurs-
ing Home, she decided it was time for
more space to make entertaining such

building experts to knock down a 24
inch stone wall and rebuild it 20 feet
further out. The kitchen and dining
area would be enlarged and a new
entranceway added.
Doris and her daughter, Mary Ellen
Whaley and son Roy, talked over
plans and Pat Malloy of Duo Builders
was engaged for the job. It was the
beginning of August, when the job
was to start and Doris remembers
there was a great deal of packing to
do. "One of the girls helping said I
had enough dishes to feed the town-
ship," Doris remembers smiling.
The first step was moving the wall
and her one concern was that she
might lose the exterior beauty of the
stonework, but mason "Lucky" Boe-
mer, who has done all of the stone
work on the house in recent years,
worked very hard to match the new
addition to the old house, Doris said.
Using stones from the original wall
and from the barn foundation, Boemer
blended the stones so the new is not
contentious with the old.
Having had knee surgery a few years
before, Doris wanted a kitchen that
