Robert says if a customer set a
price for him to work in, he can
usually accomplish it simply. He
has, he said, done diamond rings
from $125 to $5,000.
When buying jewellery, either
from a store, or custom made,
Robert warns there are many things
to be wary of. "Anything made in
Canada should have the logo and

the karat stamped on it so if there is
any problem with it, it can be sent
back."
"People need to look into the
appreciation value when they buy a
ring. Cluster rings for example,
may have the carat weight. but it's
comprised of a lot of little stones.
That ring will not go up in value
because of the repair work it will
eventually need. A simple one carat
stone will always have at least the

value it had when you bought it or
will appreciate." The problem, he
explains is due to all the claws it
takes to hold the tiny stones. "They
need re -tipping frequently. When
people bring a cluster ring for repair
they will be shocked at the cost,
which can be higher than the ring
cost originally. If you charge six
dollars to repair a claw, adding your
labour on top, and you've got 30
claws, it gets pretty expensive."
When someone comes in to
Stoddart's asking for a cluster ring
Robert will first try to talk them out
of it. "There's no value in it. It's
nice to have a larger centre stone
than a small single one in the
middle. I try to inform people
what's best. yet find something that
appeals to their taste.
If someone still wants a cluster
ring of small stones, Robert sug-
gests that they shop carefully and
find one that has thick shanks.
"Make sure you are going to buy
something that won't have to be
replaced." Custom work, he adds,
will always appreciate in value.

The pride Robert takes in his craft
and his work is evident. He
espouses vehemently the value of
custom jewellery and impresses
upon people its benefits with con-
viction and the knowledge gained
through years of experience.
"When you possess a piece of
custom made jewellery, you own
something unique. It is an art form,
a quality work that lasts a lifetime.
There is no question, when it comes
to jewellery, custom work stands
out from the rest."
