SWINE SEMINARS
COMING UP
Experts from around the world will
be touring Ontario in January and Feb-
ruary as part of the Excellence in Swine
Production Series co-sponsored by six
county pork producer associations and
16 agribusinesses.
Key speakers will be John Gadd and
Alan Lightfoot from England, Paul
Hemsworth from Australia, Ove Olson
from Sweden, Frank Adheme from
Alberta, and Sylvia D'Allaire from
Quebec. Frank Kains, Doug Morrison,
Cathy Empleton, and Cathy Aker will
represent Ontario.
The cost is $150 for the four sessions
or $50 for a single session (participants
in the Ontario Pork Industry Improve-
ment Plan are eligible for a rebate of 50
per cent of the cost of the course). Pro-
ducers may register at the Perth, Huron,
Wellington, Waterloo, Middlesex, or
Lambton OMAF office.0
AUSTRALIA WILL
CLEAN UP MEAT
The Australian government has
committed millions of dollars to clean-
ing up and monitoring pesticide resi-
dues in export meat.
The discovery of the residues was
responsible for the banning of imports
of Australian beef by the U.S. Canada
and Japan also threatened a ban. The
U.S. ban, which lasted four months, was
lifted in August, revitalizing a devas-
tated Australian beef industry.
The pesticides involved are DDT
and dieldrin. They have been banned,
and some 50 farms that shipped abnor-
mally contaminated carcasses have
been quarantined.
The government funds he used
to set up a national residue-.... ;icoring
program. Other funds will be used to
operate a joint program with provincial
governments to collect stockpiled in-
secticides for disposal.
Meat samples from every farm sup-
plying cattle for slaughter are now being
collected, in part to allay fears that local
meat products may be contaminated too.
The monitoring of mutton and lamb has
also been increased.0
