"No other occupational group in Canada has changed as much as women in agriculture," says CACSW president Sylvia Gold. "Women play a major role in this vital component of the Canadian economy, but until now their contribu- tions have been largely ignored." The 225 -page report, called "Grow- ing Strong: Women in Agriculture," stresses the need for more legal and economic recognition of the work women do on the farm. It recommends, for example, that women who work for pay with their spouse on family farms contribute to unemployment insurance and receive the benefits it provides, such as mater- nity leave and access to occupational training programs." And each of the four authors of the report calls for rural child-care services tailored to seasonal work and isolated locations. As the report notes, in 1981 about one-third of farm women held off -farm jobs in addition to working an average of 36 hours a week in the home. Other recommendations included: • better health services for handi- capped children and the elderly, • decentralized medical care with transportation both within rural com- munities and to urban centres, • improved information and legisla- tion on farm health and safety, • funding for transition homes for farm women victimized by family vio- lence, • access to adult education for farm women. For copies of the report, contact the CACSW Distribution Centre, 613-992- 4976. The release of "Growing Strong" coincided with the third National Farm Women's Conference held in Sas- katchewan last month.0
