PERTH COUNTY KICKS OFF THE 1988
INTERNATIONAL PLOWING MATCH

Up, up, and away! Officials of the 1988 International Plowing Match release balloons,
some of them carrying free tickets to the '88 IPM, on the kick-off day last month. The
Perth IPM next September will be at W. Charlot Farms Ltd. and neighbours in Downie
Township southwest of Stratford. The dust has now settled on the site of the 1987 IPM
in Meaford, where attendance, at 120,000, was up 10 per cent over the year before.
The Grey County site was crossed with a giant electromagnet used to find stray tent
pegs and collect nails, nuts, bolts, and other metallic objects buried up to eight
centimetres below the surface. In '86, about 50 kilograms of metal debris was
collected. A final step in the clean-up is fertilization to restore nutrients to the soil.
Below, Ontario Plowmen's Association president Albert Carson, right, and Perth IPM
committee chairman Doug Aitchison demonstrate the Perth County kick-off literally.
