CATTLE WATER
NEEDS CRITICAL
Clean, fresh water in constant supply
is one of the most essential nutrients in a
livestock feeding program, but it is often
overlooked, especially if the operation
has expanded since the well or pond was
installed.
Water makes up 80 per cent of the
blood, regulates body temperatures, and
is vital for digestion, waste removal, and
the absorption of nutrients.
Daily water requirements vary with
air temperature, humidity, the species
and age of the animal, the water content
of the diet, the loss of sweat from exer-
tion, the temperature of the water, and
the salt content in the water supply. The
amount of dry matter in the ration also
influences the amount of water drunk by
a beef animal.
The temperature of the water is also
important for the efficient conversion of
feed to energy. Cattle prefer warm wa-
ter, and consumption will increase if the
temperature of the water increases.

Water quality should be assessed at
the point of use, not at the source. Water
relatively pure at the source often be-
comes contaminated by dust, nasal and
fecal droppings, or slime from fungus,
algae, and mold organisms.
A high iron level in the water supply
has also been shown to influence the
conception rate in a cow herd, and im-
pure water can alter the quality or quan-
tity of milk.
Diseases that may be transmitted
from animal to animal using the same
water trough are anthrox, blackleg, foot
rot, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, samon-
ellosis, brucellosis, foot and mouth dis-
ease, coccidiosis, and erysipelis.0
