4 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
In the Bruce County Federation
of Agriculture annual report, to be
released this month, Brian Ireland
of Tees -water writes that the farming
community is suffering from a mas-
sive case of "burn out." Noting recent
setbacks in the health of agriculture,
he adds that "as the setbacks get more
frequent, the pulling back from organ-
izations and community life increases
... Volunteers for community events
become scarce. Leaders of organiza-
tions lack direction because members
themselves fail to draw a clear map."
His point is well made, and a
critical factor in the struggle of far-
mers and farm leaders to take hold of
their own future. But another critical
factor is the positive side: the fact
that, despite the difficult questions of
policy and practice facing the agricul-
tural community, there are many
willing to give their best to get the
answers.
Among them are the panelists
(including Brian Ireland) who ap-
peared at the high school in Clinton
to talk to students studying the "farm
crisis" — the story is featured in our
news section — and the farmers we
talk to in our feature on part-time
farming. Despite problems, the atti-
tude they share is positive — at the
least, they don' t give up. As Centralia
College principal Bill Allen remarks
on page 26, "It's our aim to have a
positive outlook, even though we are
dealing with an industry that many
have viewed pessimistically."
"There is no question," he adds,
"that there is a career in agriculture."
Here's hoping that's not news.0
