STARTING A FARM:
THREE FACTORS
Can a young person start farming
today? The answer requires another
question. How much financing should
the farmer need and how much equity?
People who work in finances and
farming aren' t positive about farms with
50 per cent equity and give almost no
hope to those with 25 per cent equity or
less. This is probably with good reason.
According the the Ontario Farm Man-
agement Analysis Project 1985, it
would be hard to cover payments. Take
the following examples.
A cash crop farm with $497,000 in
assets has a net farm income of $29,958
before debt. Family living is $12,000,
leaving a residual for debt of $17,958.
The farm can handle $138,000 in debt at
10 percent interest with 3 per cent of the
principal paid in a year. Therefore, the
percentage of equity required to start
farming is 72 per cent.
In a farrow to finish operation, the
amount is 30 per cent given assets of
$509,000. The farm produces $58,300
in net income minus $12,000 for family
living, leaving $46,300 for debt. At 10
per cent interest with 3 per cent paid on
the principle, the farm can handle
$356,000 in debt.
In dairy, with assets at $683,000, net
income at $52,500, and family living
costing $12,000, $40,500 is left for debt.
The farm can handle $312,000 in debt,
and a beginning farmer would need 55
per cent equity.
A beef feedlot with assets of
$818,000, a net income of $43,200, and
$12,000 going to family living, has
$31,200 left to pay debt. It can handle
