60 GREY COUNTY PLOWING MATCH EDITION
AROUND GREY
THE GREY WI
Lois Urstadt with some of the Earl
and Nellie Grey caricatures she
designed for the 1987 IPM. WI
members have made 1,000 of them.
There are 59 branches of the
Women's Institute in Grey County.
They cover five districts and count
1,200 members.
The Women's Institute recognizes
achievements in the county through two
awards. The Agnes Campbell Macphail
Fund provides scholarships to two insti-
tute women within the county who have
done outstanding work in the commu-
nity. One 94 -year-old recipient of the
Agnes Macphail award looked after her
ailing 60 -year-old son who needed con-
stant care rather than put him in a nurs-
ing home.
Awards are also presented to two
residents of the county between 16 and
30 years of ages who have done volun-
teer work, which otherwise often goes
unrecognized.
In addition to a spring and fall meet-
ing, the institute holds a county fun day
each summer.
Gladys Coxon of Chatsworth is in
her fourth of six years as secretary-
treas urer.
Several Women's Institute branches
entered quilts in the International Plow-
ing Match quilt competition, says
county chairman Yvonne Thom of
Meaford. The Bluewater Women's In-
stitute, under the capable guidance of
plowing match representative Lois
Urstadt, has made about 1,000 lapel
caricatures of Earl and Nellie Grey to
promote the match.
At the banquet in Meaford Septem-
ber 17, 55 institute members will serve
dinner to approximately 1,200 guests.0
