46 GREY COUNTY PLOWING MATCH EDITION
AGRICULTURAL
SOCIETIES
There are 27 fairs held each year in
Dictrict 10 of the Agricultural Society,
which covers Grey and Bruce counties.
Those fairs span a three-month period
from Ayton's Summerfest in July to the
Walkerton Little Royal in mid-October.
"The Agricultural Societies pro-
mote rural farm activities and better
farming practices, better breeding, and
the growing of better grains," says Allan
Koehler, chairman of District 10.
Koehler, who lives in Durham, has
been a member of the Agricultural Soci-
ety for more than 40 years. His wife,
Anna, is past president of the home -
crafts division of the Ontario Fair
Board.-"' "
Tourism is a major industry in Grey
County, and the Agricultural Society
encourages tourists and summer resi-
dents to participate in the many fair
activities, particularly in the baking,
crafts, and vegetables categories. "We
like to incorporate urban people as much
as possible," Anna says.
The Koehlers have lived in Durham
for 27 years. Growing up on a farm,
Anna attended many fairs as a child.
Allan, not raised on a farm, "had to get
interested in fairs when he married me,"
she says. Now retired, Allan Koehler
worked for the LCBO and Post Office in
Durham.0
