ADVICE
TORNADO WILL
SHOW UP ON TV
The Farm Safety Association re-
ports that a television or radio can be a
fast, reliable warning device if a tornado
threatens your area.
A number of tornadoes track across
Ontario every year, and it's important to
decide in advance where family mem-
bers could seek shelter.
If using the television to detect the
seriousness of a storm, tune in channel
13. Turn the brightness control until the
screen is almost black. Then switch
over to channel 2 and leave the volume
turned down.
Lightning will produce momentary
white bands of varying widths across the
screen of a black and white television —
colour sets produce colour bands. A
tornado within 15 to 20 miles will pro-
duce a totally white screen that remains
white — or colour in the case of a colour
set. Should this occur, switch off the
television, take a portable radio, and
seek appropriate shelter immediately.
This system works because channel
2 has a frequency of 55 MHz. Lightning
and tornadoes generate a signal near this
frequency which overrides the bright-
ness control. Channel 13 is at the high
end of the VHF band, and so is not
affected. That's why the darkness must
be set on this channel.
Keep a portable radio on hand for
emergency instructions in case of power
failure. If the radio is tuned to 550 KHz,
lightning will cause intermittent static.
A tornado will cause steady, continuous
static.0
ROUND BARN
CUTS CHORES
By housing his pigs in a round, 28 -
foot diameter, 14 -foot high concrete -
sided structure with a domed roof, Allan
Miller of the Temiskaming District can
spend only about a half hour each day
doing chores in his 100 -pig weaner to
market barn.
A centre post extends from the top of
the barn down to a radial arm cleaning
unit and gate. The devices looks like a
long gate the width of the barn.
