NEW PORK CLUB
ISA SUCCESS
Ken Bate, chairman of the recently
formed Huron County Pork Club, re-
ports that the idea has been as successful
in practice as in theory. "It has gone over
really well," he says, "We have very
seldom had any people miss a meeting."
Under the club's auspices, 20 mem-
bers get together every month or so (10
times a year) to discuss problems and
interests of mutual concern. Subjects
for discussion are decided two months
ahead, and members come prepared to
offer comments based on their own
experience.
"There used to be thrashing parties
where farmers could get together to talk.
Now they never get a chance just to get
together round the kitchen table," says
Bate, who is farm manager for Kase
Vanden Heuvel of R. R. 2, Goderich.
Meetings, Bate adds, are usually held at
a member's farm, and the first hour of
the gathering is often devoted to a tour of
the operation.
The club was formed following a
meeting at the Clinton OMAF office in
June of this year. About eight people
turned up, and for the next meeting each
brought a friend or neighbour.
The group hopes to get funding —
maybe $100 a year — through money
granted to the Ontario Pork Producers
Marketing Board through the Ontario
Pork Industry Improvement Plan (most
members of the club are involved in
OPIIP, but participation in the plan is
not required). In the interim, each farm
operation represented in the club has
donated $10 toward mailing costs, boots
for farm visits, and coffee.
Andy Sande, pork advisor for the
Huron OMAF office, was instrumental
in organizing the first meeting. Before
Christmas, he says, there may be two
other clubs operating in Huron County,
one in the northern part, and one in the
eastern area.0
FARM SAFETY: Hitching a
wagon to your tractor can be es-
pecially dangerous on uneven
ground. Make sure the tractor
brakes are set. Never allow any-
one between the tractor and the
wagon when the tractor is in gear.
