He has long been involved in farm organiza- tions and knows they suffer from chronic underfunding. He also knows they are among the most democratic organizations in our society. But in the August issue he condemns the idea of the Ontario Federation of Agri- culture and the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario being funded through a compulsory check -off (the OFA and CFFO are asking for a refundable check -off). He objects because the OFA has gone to the commodity boards (which are funded by compulsory check -offs) to discuss a resolution, passed by a completely democratic convention, asking for a vote on whether or not various com- modity groups desire supply manage- ment. Is he asking the OFA to sup- press democracy, or Jack Riddell to remove the commodity groups' check- off'? I for one cannot support either idea. I'm afraid you've got it backwards, Adrian. You should be supporting all farm groups in their attempts to get adequate funding to make them more effective, and you should be in favour of healthy debate on any issue that affects the farm community. Until now, I believed you supported both concepts. Douglas Garniss R. R. 4, Wingham The Rural Voice welcomes the views of readers and will publish as many letters as space permits.
