Effective August 1, 1987, the Grey County Federation of Agricul-
ture will be supplying The Rural Voice magazine to all farmers in Grey
County. If by chance we have missed anyone we would appreciate
knowing so that we can add the names to our list. If you know of any
farmer in the county who is not receiving the magazine, please call the
office in Hanover, 364-3050.
THE GRENVILLE RESOLUTION
The Grenville Resolution: is there anyone who has not heard of it? The cattlemen do not like
it, the wheat producers have protested it, the pork producers are up in arms, and several of the pork
producers have cancelled their membership in the federation because of it, on grounds that the OFA
is trying to force supply management on pork producers. I wonder how many of these complainers
ha, e read the resolution or know what it is asking for?
I opposed this resolution, but I do not see anything about it to get so worked up over.

Following is a copy of the Grenville Resolution as it was passed at the 1986 OFA convention.
Many seem convinced that it is calling for supply managmeent when in fact it is calling for a
referendum to choose a marketing system agreeable to our red meat producers to determine what
the majority of those producers wish.
RESOLUTION SESSION FIVE, Wednesday, 8:30 a.m.
RESOLUTION 9
GRENVILLE: Red Meat Producers
WHEREAS the number one problem in Ontario agriculture today is low farm income, and this is clearly evident in the returns
in the red meat sectors,
WHEREAS there are two marketing options available to red meat producers to improve their low farm income, namely:
1. Free enterprise marketing
2. market intervention, which could include market controls, subsidies, etc.
WHEREAS OFA is the recipient of petitions from discordant groups within the industry where no appropriate response can be
granted,
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the OFA and other general farm organizations together with representatives of red
meat producer groups direct maximum effort to a demand of the provincial government to set up a referendum calling for a free
vote, commodity by commodity, of all red meat producers on their choice of marketing methods.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that we urge the provincial government to convene a referendum committee composed of
representatives from commodity organizations, government, and general farmorganizations to: a) develop a referendum question,
b) ensure the referendum is held within 12 months, and c) establish minimum production standards for eligibility to vote.
FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that a vote result showing a majority (66 2/3 %) in favour of a specific option be accepted
by the commodity group involved as clear direction to proceed in that direction without objection, for a minimum 5 -year period.
