DAIRY AWARD
UniversityofGuelph professor Ted
Burnside is the first Canadian to receive
the J. L. Lush Award in animal breeding
and genetics from the American Dairy
Science Association.
Bumside's work has focused on
sire evaluation systems for production,
type, and stayability traits. A pioneer in
linear programming techniques applied
to decision-making about dairy cattle,
he has recently concentrated on the rela-
tion betwe:n conventional animal
breeding and biotechnology.
Bumside was instrumental in creat-
ing the Centre for Genetic Improvement
of Livestock at the university and serves
as the centre's director.0
BRUCE CHOOSES
NEW 4-H QUEEN
Kendra Pennington, the 15 -year-
old daughter of Donna and Ray Pen-
nington ofTeeswater, was chosen Bruce
County 4-H Queen from 10 contestants
at the Paisley Community Centre last
month.
First runner-up is Teresa Schuler of
Kincardine. The contestants chose
Connie Borth as Miss Congeniality.

REPLACE COWS?
It has been estimated that through
the use of somatotropin cows will be
able to produce up to 40 per cent more
milk than they do now.
But in another 20 years, Bossy
might be replaced altogether. Food
scientists in the U.S. are looking
seriously at producing milk with lab-
oratory machines. Theoretically, they
say, it must be possible to engineer
large numbers of enzymes genetically
in a way similar to the method used to
convert com starch into sugar.
Many bio -engineers shake their
head in disbelief, contending that too
many complex compounds are in-
volved. But then the "impossible" has
been achieved before.OAV
