Issues of rural planning have
not only been in the news lately, but
are of general concern to all of us.
Often, says Iluron County planner
Gary Davidson in our lead feature this
month, rural communities have not
pursued planning as actively and crit-
ically as they might. And as writer
and municipal councillor Rhea
Hamilton -Seeger notes, communities
"need to be imaginative, to find new
routes to old destinations, and to be
prepared to accept responsibility for
the future."
Accepting responsibility for the
future in an imaginative way are the
young people staying on farms in the
Chesley arca this summer. From Peru
and across Canada, they are being co-
ordinated during their stay here by
Suzanne Stump of Walkerton. We
feature the group on page 16.
Celebrating the past and looking
forward to the future recently were a
group of farmers at Iluron County's
OFA anniversary celebrations. A
Rural Voice photographer has caught
some of the events on page 24.
Also this month we have a look
at at a farm operation that welcomes
city visitors as part of the Ontario
Vacation Farm Association. Hosting
has proven, for some, to be rewarding
in many ways. And, last but certainly
not least, writer Iris Brown talks to the
Lassalines, a young couple whose
orchard operation south of Goderich is
thriving nicely.0
