4 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
We're all only too well aware of
the problems facing farmers today,
from financing to animal welfarists to
free trade issues, but what prevails in
agriculture is the farmer's insistence
that his business is worth running and
his way of life worth protecting. June
is Dairy Month, and it's also the
month of the Ontario Pork Congress.
This month The Rural Voice features
dairy and pork, and also looks at four
farm operations and their management.
What's striking about the farmers
interviewed is not only their intense
and varied search for improvements on
their farm and in their industry, but
their commitment to agriculture.
Take Gary and Joan Fischer, for
example, who are working toward
ownership of their own farm by run-
ning a dairy operation on five leased
acres — or Martin and Teresa Van •
Raay, who are also "beginning" far-
mers. They, virtually overnight, took
on the challenge of a 170 -sow farrow
to finish operation, several hundred
acres of cash crops, and a Pioneer
dealership. The Jack brothers of Perth
County are also pork producers, and
well known for being efficient and
innovative. Their concerns, like those
of Bruce Saunders, extend far beyond
the farm gate. Saunders, a director on
the milk board, is a well-established
dairyman who, with his brother and
father, owns a herd of 80 Holsteins.
The demands of farming call on
many kinds of resources and the
rewards sometimes appear to be slim,
but it also seems true that, as Gary
Fischer says, "There are always more
people who want to farm than there are
people who are able to farm. "0
