WHAT'S NEW
NEW MUCOLYTIC FOR
HORSES ON MARKET
Boehringer Ingelheim has intro-
duced Sputolysin, a mucolytic for
horses for the early treatment of res-
piratory diseases.
Administered in feed, Sputolysin is
a palatable powder which works to
thin out mucus in a horse's air pas-
sages. In respiratory disease, the
mucus normally found in the lung
undergoes a change. The mucopoly-
saccharides (MPS) form a continuous,
strong network which creates a build-
up of mucus. To compound the pro-
blem, viruses and certain micro-
organisms can destroy the cilia in the
lungs, which further reduces the
horse's ability to clear mucus.
Sputolysin increases the body's
production of lysosomal enzymes to
break the MPS in the mucus into
small, non -continuous units. It also
reduces the protein content of the mu-
cus and increases the hexose (mono-
saccharide) components to decrease the
viscosity of the mucus as it is being
produced.
This, in effect, gives the horse the
ability to clear the mucus through
coughing. Therefore, cough suppres-
sants should never be used. At the
same time, bronchospasms caused by
the presence of abnormal mucus may
be resolved and the horse should enjoy
a rapid return to normal, with less
chance of re -infection.
