WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
MARK 90TH YEAR
Education for rural women was one
of the main aims of the Women's
Institutes when they were established
90 years ago. That aim hasn't altered,
although the subjects covered have
changed with the times.
Each Women's Institute branch
organizes its own program, and the
following topics indicate the variety of
concerns covered by a single branch:
the treatment and care of crippled and
handicapped children, painting pottery,
the Associated Country Women of the
World Conference in Ireland, colours
and scarf tying, touring farms, cooking
Ontario food in the microwave, agri-
culture in the classroom, free trade,
New Zealand, the care of children in
the Children's Hospital of Western
Ontario, the Family Law Act, adop-
tion, how to become a Canadian
citizen, cooking and preparing beef,
and preparing meals quickly.
County workshops have included
geneology, job sharing, effective par-
enting, Prince Edward Island, positive
thinking, planning a wardrobe, exer-
cise, writing a resumes, searching for a
job, and starting a business.
Last year at the London Area
meeting the theme speaker discussed
the safe disposal of nuclear waste. The
year before the topic was organ
transplants.
Anyone wishing to join an organ-
ization which explores contemporary
concerns as thoroughly as it did 90
years ago should contact the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food to
find out the location of the nearest
branch.0
A HEAD START
ON YOUR GARDEN
Start melon, squash, and cucumber
seeds indoors this year in 10 cm (4 -
inch) pots with well -drained house-
plant soil.
Three or four seeds per pot, later
thinned down to one or two of the
strongest seedlings, will produce
stalky young plants to set outside
early in June. By starting them
indoors now, these early plants will
soon produce a bumper crop in the
vegetable garden.0
