FINANCIAL TIPS FOR
FARM MANAGEMENT
As financial managers, farmers
must be prepared for adversity as well
as prosperity, and adversity is con-
siderably more likely given some of
the commodity prices these days. Dr.
Larry Wynant of the University of
Western Ontario School of Business
Administration has some suggestions.
Restructure financing: where such
a move is appropriate to a farm, it
may be possible to stretch terms and
to get the repayment geared to new
circumstances.
Make certain you get your busi-
ness information on a timely basis,
and be on top of it. Profit and loss
statements that are six months old
may be too late.
Maintain relationships with out-
side parties when problems arise.
Keep your banker informed about your
problems and the measures that you are
undertaking to counter them. Instill
confidence in both your suppliers and
buyers.
Pull in your horns. Cut back on
costs and sell off excess assets.

SYSTEM MEASURES
SILO GRAIN DEPTH
Two Montreal engineers, Cyril
McSweeney and Tom Coumane, have
developed a system that measures silo
grain depths and is not damaged by
dust.
Called the LM6400, the measuring
system consists of a cable suspended
from the top of a silo and hanging to
the bottom. At one end, the cable
connects to a microprocessor.
When a signal is sent along the
cable, it bounces off the surface of the
grain back to the microprocessor,
which calculates how far the signal
went and how much grain remains in
the silo. One microprocessor can
monitor 40 silos.
The company for which the two
engineers work, Celtek Electronics
Inc., has already sold three of the
devices, and a recent U.S. study
estimates a potential market for the
product of $211 million a year.0
