farmers are adopting residue manage-
ment as a short-term or partial field
insurance plan. Residue that appears
to be too extreme for effective planting
with conventional equipment is being
chopped in fall or spring and is then
more easily managed at planting time.
Lift -plow waterways are also be-
coming more popular as farmers real-
ize the effectiveness of residue in
erodable areas. Although most of the
field is plowed, residue in the erosion -
prone areas is left in the fall to offer
protection from snow melt, spring
rains, or high winds.
Other effective measures enjoy-
ing renewal are strip -cropping, strip
tillage, cropping across slopes, crop
rotation, and minimum tillage.
Long-term insurance policies can
include structures such as grassed
waterways, berms, terraces, and di-
versions. The higher initial costs of
these options is offset by the long-
term protection they provide.
