"There are several plants using this
concept in Europe, and one in the
United States," he says. In the pro-
posed plant, a centrifugal device will
separate the protein and starch compo-
nents of the wheat early in the pro-
cessing. The protein can then be
refined into products for human
consumption while the starches will
go through the fermentation process to
produce ethanol.
Helmut Sieber
The Bruce production complex got
a boost last month when Premier
David Peterson announced that the
province will spend up to $6.5 million
to provide sewer and water services.
Canadian Agra, however, has
worked on other plans in the event that
the Bruce ethanol plant was indefin-
itely delayed. The company has discov-
ered a process which reduces straw or
even wood waste to bricks that can be
bumed as an energy source for an alter-
native plant.
The possibility of using the straw
as well as the grain makes an ethanol -
protein plant workable anywhere near a
grain -growing area, Sieber says.
The cost of transporting the raw
material to the plant would be a major
expense, but Sieber envisages a series
of smaller plants rather than one large
one. Ideally, each plant would use a
maximum of about 10,000 tons of
wheat per year, he suggests.
With regard to the "black" wheat
rumour, Sieber says that Canadian
Agra was unaware of the wheat board's
mandate when the project began.
"Agriculture Canada didn't inform us,"
he says, adding, "I don't see how they
would be involved anyway."
When asked to speculate about the
circulation of rumours about the Adam
wheat project, Sieber shrugs, thinks a
moment, and replies. "I suppose
anyone actively doing things will be
talked about."0
