The Rural Voice, 1987-05, Page 23accentuate the good and hide the bad,"
she remarks. Miller particularly
enjoys meeting schoolchildren who
come to the show and are often seeing
and touching livestock for the first
time. The first question children ask
is "why do the sheep wear blankets?"
The teachers usually reply that it's to
keep the sheep warm, but in fact the
blanket keeps the fleece clean.
There is a definite need to educate
the public about farming, Miller says.
Her father's farm is home to sheep,
rabbits, goats, and fancy poultry, and
schoolchildren often visit. "It's up to
us as country people to educate the not -
so -country people and let them see that
we're not country bumpkins." The
need for education is shown up by the
misconceptions of urban people. For
example, a professor from Toronto
recently asked what the growths were
under a sow's belly. The same man
wondered how the chickens could be
laying eggs when no rooster was with
them.
Miller has been a 4-H leader for
10 years, leading 24 clubs, including
homemaking, gardening, and sheep.
She has developed a hands-on approach
to her favourite, the sheep club, and
tries to help the kids experience all
facets of the sheep industry first-hand.
She is general secretary of the first
annual Saugeen Country Sheep and
Wool Show and Sale, which will be
held in Markdale May 29 and 30.
Fleece and sheepskin rug competitions
are among the many events planned for
the weekend event, and there will also
be a special children's area.
Miller believes that there is cause
for optimism in the sheep industry for
farmers who are prepared to stay with
it. She hopes someday to write a
book about sheep management and
her experiences as a sheep shearer.
