2 THE RURAL VOICE
EDITOR'S DESK
The state of our soil and water has
been under increasing scrutiny lately,
and the provincial and federal govern-
ments have announced a number of
new conservation programs and agen-
cies in recent months. Given this
growing concern over our resources,
both on the part of farmers and the
general public, and given that National
Soil Conservation Week was observed
in April and National Forestry Week is
scheduled for May, The Rural Voice
focuses this month on conservation, a
subject that ranges from conservation
tillage to agro-forestry and the Great
Lakes clean-up.
In honour of spring and lambing
season and a growing agricultural
sector, we also look at the sheep
industry. Mary -Lou Weiser -Hamilton
interviews Judy Miller, a Grey County
shepherd and sheep shearer in partner-
ship with her brother, Doug, and
Andrew Dixon of Ailsa Craig remem-
bers the sheep flock on a traditional
farm. Those memories include a
lively tale of a young boy's encounter
with a justifiably bad-tempered ram.
And despite its being the busy
season when farmers and agribusiness
personnel are working double time,
there have been a number of meetings
and news events. Plus we have
gardening information in our Rural
Living department, a contribution
from 17 -year-old Jo Anne Wilhelm in
our Notebook department (her speech
for a 4-11 contest about farm life), and
some timely advice in our regular
advice section.0
