SAFETY ASSOCIATION
ANNOUNCES AWARDS
Robert Goulet, a Kent County
farmer, was re-elected president of the
Farm Safety Association at its 14th
annual conference in Toronto last
month. Renie Long of London is
again vice-president.
Also chosen were three members
of the association's executive commit-
tee: George Underwood of Wingham,
Anton Wytenburg of Richmond, and
Allen Diefenbacher of Floradale.
The association also presented
awards to three companies that have
made outstanding contributions to the
promotion of health and safety in the
agricultural industry.
Cyanamid Canada Inc. was selected
for putting together the Pesticide
Safety Action Kit, which includes the
protective gear needed to handle most
pesticides. More than 5,000 of the
kits were sold last year.
Pioneer Hi -Bred of Chatham was
recognized for producing and distri-
buting the safety storybook "Watch
Out!" Says Kerbie. The 50,000 copies
printed this winter were all distributed.
Ontario Hydro, the third recipient,
produced a full -colour booklet with
waming decals to help farmers work
safely with electrical power.0
NEW WHEAT -TESTING
METHOD DEVELOPED
Australian researchers have devel-
oped a new method of testing the
quality of wheat at harvest.
The system judges damage caused
by rain with a machine that measures
the consistency of a porridge made
from freshly harvested and milled
wheat. The force required from a small
electric motor stirring the mixture
produces the results.
The technique tells testers how
much amylase, an enzyme found in
sprouting grain, is in the wheat.
Amylase breaks down starches and
proteins in sprouting grain.
With the old system of testing
wheat quality, which measured the
time taken for a paddle to fall through
a porridge, the need for elaborate
glassware and a cumbersome heating
system was inconvenient.0
