ties in with intensive cereal man-
agement and other technological devel-
opments.
Is it right, for example, asked
members, that a husband has a 30,000
hen quota and his wife another quota
when this situation denies young
people entry into the commodity.
Debt Review
Jongejan also noted at the meeting
that the debt review board is not
working as anticipated. In some cases,
the 120 -day review period is over
before action even begins. Perhaps the
job of gathering information, he added,
should be taken out of the hands of the
local board panels and given to
professionals. And the 120 -day period
should not begin at the time of
application but when the panel begins
its work.
Ontario panel meetings might also
be set up to operate as efficiently as
they do in the West., he said, where at
meetings convened by the secretary
(rather than the chair) the members
have all the required information and
decisions can be made in about two
hours. The Western system can
accomplish several reviews a day.
To highlight the intensity of
problems on Western farms, Jongejan
noted that in the first two months of
this year Saskatchewan had 1,230 debt
review applications and 401 were dealt
with. Ontario had 103 applications
over the same period, of which 21
were dealt with.
The CFFO president advises any-
one whose figures indicate problems to
apply immediately in order to head off
further problems.0
CUBA RECEIVES
1,466 BUFFALOES
Cuba recently received its fust
shipment of feral buffaloes — 57 bulls
and 1,409 heifers — from Australia.
Australian farmers have been
domesticating the buffaloes for better
management and greater control of
disease. They were introduced from
Southeast Asia during early attempts
last century to establish settlements in
the Northern Territory, and when the
first settlements were withdrawn the
buffaloes survived in a wild state.0
