MAINTAIN MARKETS
Despite an intemational market
inundated with agricultural products,
Ontario wheat growers have managed
to sell more than 500,000 tonnes of
1986 winter wheat.
This is quite an accomplishment
given that there is enough wheat in
storage around the world to meet 35
per cent of annual global consumption
and that Canadian wheat growers
export 80 per cent of their crop (com-
pared to 50 per cent in the U.S. and 22
per cent in Europe).
Canada has retained exports but at
lower prices with lower retums to the
farmer," says Harold Hedley of the
grain marketing bureau of Canada's
Department of External Affairs.
He was speaking at the annual confer-
ence of the Ontario Wheat Producers
Marketing Board held last month.0

The International Development
Research Centre in Ottawa has a new
digital clock that counts up the people
in the world and counts down the
acreage available to grow them food.
The world population is growing
at a rate of about 25 people every 10
seconds, enough to take the global
population to five billion by mid -
1987.
And while only about three per
cent of the planet's surface is suitable
for food production, the amount is
decreasing by about 2 1/2 acres every
14 seconds.0
JUNIOR FARMERS
RAISE $16,000
The Junior Farmers of Ontario
recently presented a cheque for $16,000
to the Children's Wish Foundation of
Canada, an organization that works
with terminally ill children to grant
their last wish.
Individual clubs, counties, and
zones pledged contributions, and an
auction of donated items netted the
balance of $6,600.0
