The Rural Voice, 1987-03, Page 78PERTH COUNTY Pork Producers NEWSLETTER Garry Van Loon, R. R. 2, Dublin, Ontario NOK 1 EO PORK DAY AT AG WEEK Thursday, February 12 was Pork Day at Ag Week in Stratford. It was estimated that the turnout that day was about 1,000 people. The afternoon program was very well -attended and offered a free rib of pork on a bun for everyone there. Dr. Larry Stobbs from Elanco gave a slide presentation and talk on respiratory diseases in swine. The audience was informed of some very interesting results of an intensive study by Elanco at slaughterhouses, where random checks of hogs were done. His talk made us aware that we do not always know when our pigs are having respiratory problems due to stress, poor ventilation, etc. The guest speaker for the afternoon, Laurent Pellerin, chairman of the Quebec Pork Producers' Asso- ciation, filled us in on the operations of the Quebec association and market- ing methods. In Quebec on March 6, they are voting for a system of electronic marketing. Pellerin also outlined the stabili- zation program in Quebec. It is based on cost of production, allowing for 30 per cent equity and a fair wage for the operator. This was a $76 cost for the year ended March, 1986, with a limit of 5,000 per producer, and the pay was a $4 premium per hog. When asked about the long-term market outlook, Pellerin was not very optimistic, with Taiwan supplying more of Japan's needs and the U.S. becoming more protectionist. We wish them luck in setting up a marketing system and look forward to working more with Quebec. ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE On February 18, elections were held for a new executive. Many thanks to Peter Huitema for a great job done as president in 1986. Bob Fraser and Ken McEwan from OMAF attended this meeting. Bob proposed a meeting on pork marketing in the European Economic Community, possibly in early March. Ken outlined the new OSCEPAP — 11 grants are available but all the information was not yet in. 76 THE RURAL VOICE Clare Schlegel gave us an update on new correspondence with an Iowa producer association. PORK FEST Pork Fest, a tremendous success in 1986, is now handled by the Pork Congress Committee, but because of the large volume of work, the Pork Congress is asking the PCPPA to become more involved. RESOLUTIONS Much time was spent on the dis- cussion and preparation of resolutions for our annual meeting in Toronto March 18 and 19. Resolutions that were passed concern the OFA proposal, a slaughtering plant, and changes to the settlement statements. At the regional meeting of Perth, Huron, and Bruce County Corn Producers we received overwhelming support for our resolution that home - fed grains be included in the federal and provincial stabilization plans. A REMINDER Just a reminder to those who have not yet applied for their Special Grains Stabilization — high -moisture corn and all grains fed at home do qualify. Be sure to apply. BARBECUE SERVICE Also remember our famous bar- becued cured pork chops last summer! Book now if you are having a function that our barbecue committee could help you with.
