The Rural Voice, 1987-01, Page 51feet. These extensions are called eave
retums, and they also appear on all other
old classic house styles.
The front door of the oldest Waterloo
classic houses is usually a solid six -
panelled door. It has small -paned
windows across the top and on each
side just like the front entrances of all
the old classic houses.
Many of the Waterloo classic
houses are made entirely of fieldstone.
The earliest are usually two full storeys
in height (before the roof line and end
gables were added). Some later ones
have a lower roof line, which makes
them a storey and a half like the other
classic Ontario farmhouses.
The German masons didn't use
pretentious dressed stonework and
preferred to build walls of a higgledy-
piggledy pattem with plenty of lime
mortar covering the joints. Wherever a
veranda floor or a stoop floor was to be
located, a row of large splashstones was
put in a line at that place on the stone
wall. The stone walls became thinner
with each storey added. Where field-
stone (which was inexpensive) was not
in good supply, the builder used brick
or beam -frame construction. Many
solid stone houses were plastered over
with mortar because this was the best
method of preventing water from
seeping through the walls — seepage
was a source of annoyance despite
good workmanship.
At the rear of the complex was
a small building with an enormous
fireplace which was used for meat
preparation, etc. There was also a
smokehouse which was small and
usually made of stone.
Often, in Waterloo, the original
classic house had an addition placed
carefully towards the back on one end.
This addition carried architectural
features of a later period. This was
where the grandparents retired to and it
was called the doddy house or some
similar name.
The Waterloo classic house is
described here because members of the
German community generally spread to
the north and west across Perth, Grey,
and Bruce counties, taking with them
many of the Waterloo building features,
which were incorporated into the
buildings of later generations.0
