A look at the following study of family living ex- penditures of Iowa farm families may prompt you to keep track of yours. CASH EXPENSES FOR LIVING Food purchased 3,667 Clothing and personal items 2,169 Household operations 1,562 Health 394 Recreation, vacation 1,995 Education 789 Giving 409 Auto operating expenses 1,995 Miscellaneous, childcare 1,502 Total Cash Living Expenses 14.482 INVESTMENT FOR LIVING Home improvement Home furnishing and equipment Automobile purchase Life insurance Total Cash Expenditures 184 490 338 1,208 16.702 Farm product used (at market value, represents a decrease in cash income) 367 TOTAL USED FOR LIVING 17.069 The average net farm income was $11,232. The average off -farm income was $4,088 These families, on average, had to make up $1,749 more cash than they generated in 1985. That is, when they added their net farm income and their off -farm income, they had $15,320. That had to meet $17,069 of expenses (or almost, as it probably didn't cost quite $367 cash to produce $367 worth of farm produce). This money most likely came from: ° reduction in inventories ° liquidation of fixed assets ° increased borrowing ° depreciation (not replacing capital items when necessary). Over the long run, equity is being eroded significantly. And many people don't know this is happening because it happens so gradually. Keeping track of your household
