information has presented it many
times and points out tiny figures in
the third column of the eighth row.
And then more farmers start to nod.
Unfortunately, they usually have
turned out the lights so you can't read.
If you must sit through this type
of presentation, there are some criteria
that decide whether research is good or
not. First, if the datum is a summary
of a number of trials (six or more)
over two or more years, it's considered
good datum. If, however, a researcher
is trying to make a point based on one
location and one year, the research is
considered poor.
Another factor to watch for is the
C.V. This is the co -efficient of
variability. All research trials must
have that C.V. If the C.V. of a
research trial is more than 15 per cent,
the research is considered questionable.
I've seen many research trials presented
at winter meetings with a C.V. much
over 15 per cent.
The C.V. is a measurement of the
variability across the trials. It is used
as an indication of how uniform the
piece of land was. It also indicates
how sloppily the trial was conducted.
If a good deal of research information
is presented without a C.V., be
suspicious.
Again, the real merit in having a
researcher speak at a meeting is the
following question period. Don't be
afraid to ask what appears to be a
"stupid question." If it seems to you
that the speaker has left something
unanswered, there are probably many
others thinking the same thing. But if
you don't want to ask the speaker in
front of everyone, ask him afterwards.
Probably the most valuable part of
winter meetings is the conversations
between farmers. Here is where the
real transfer of information goes on.
This fact alone makes meetings
worthwhile.0
