New ways
to connect
By Janice Becker
Veteran web watchers can eventu-
ally become annoyed waiting hours
for the latest program versions to
download. For those impatient sorts,
heavy users or for increased efficien-
cy of internet-using employees, there
are options.
The most readily available in urban
settings is accessing internet via cable
lines. Large cable television
providers such as Rogers or Shaw
detail their packages on websites as
do several smaller local providers.
Rogers@Home, at rogers.home.
com, offers an unlimited monthly
package for $39.95. Up to three com-
puters can be hooked up in one
household with an additional cost of
$9.95 per machine. A family may
also have five separate e-mail
addresses. A 5MB webpage is includ-
ed for each address. There is an
installation fee from $150 to $200 or
under $100 for self -installers. For
non -cable television subscribers, add
$10 per month to the fee.
Shaw, at shaw.home.com, has lim-
ited availability in Ontario, mostly in
the Barrie and Toronto areas. The
cost is $39.95 per month plus $150
for the full installation.
Village Cable TV which serves
mid -western Ontario offers cable
internet as does Bluewater TV.
Bluewater, at www.cabletv.on.ca,
a relatively new internet provider, has
a very good website outlining numer-
ous packages. For residential users
the costs range from $39.95 to
$64.95, while businesses have
tremendous options depending on the
speed required.
All cable internet providers tell of
the drastically increased speeds for
downloads, freedom from dialing up
and the ability to use the internet, talk
on the phone and watch television all
at the same time. This is a very per-
suasive factor for families with a fre-
quent demand for phone time.
Some providers suggest download
times are as much as 100 times faster
than a 28.8 modem, retrieving a
3.5MB file in 10 seconds rather than
16 minutes.
