To drive a snowmobile in Ontario, an operator must have either a valid Driver's Licence or a Snowmobile Operator's Permit. This documentation, along with proot of
insurance and sled ownership must accompany each driver while operating a snowmobile.
The legal minimum age to operate a snowmobile is 12. Anyone 12 years and older who does not have a Driver's Licence of any type, must graduate from the OFSC
Driver Training course to receive a Snowmobile Operator's Permit. The course is also recommended for novice riders of all ages, regardless of whether or not they
already have a Driver's Licence. After all, the operation of a snowmobile requires special skills and awareness unique to riding on snow and ice.
Upon graduation and after obtaining an OFSC Trail Permit, students aged 12 to 16 may
operate a snowmobile on OFSC trails, but are not allowed to drive the machine along or
across public roads. For liability reasons, the Driver Training Course does not include hands-on
instruction, so it is highly recommended that new graduates be accompanied by an
experienced snowmobiler during their initiation period.
You have to wear a helmet while riding a sled and obey the 50 kilometre per hour maximum
speed limit. You must also carry your Driver's Licence or Snowmobile Operator's Permit with
you at all times. You should also carry sled ownership and proof of insurance. Ontario residents
also have to display current Ontario snowmobile registration numbers on both sides of the
hood. To ride your snowmobile on OFSC snowmobile trails, which comprise 99% of Ontario's
groomed trail network, you also have to acquire an OFSC Trail Permit.
Snowmobilers in Ontario are subject to the same rules of the road as motorists. Driving
infractions may result in fines, loss of points or Driver's Licence, and/or incarceration for
criminal code violations such as drinking and driving.
