pieces to each side of the small
plantation. The total cost was about
$25. (Consumer Reports noted that
the sphere of effectiveness of a sachet
of either human hair or soap is only
about two feet. To get complete
protection, therefore, I should
probably have tied a piece of soap in
each tree on the perimeter of the
plantation.)
Last year I made a few mistakes,
which I have avoided repeating this
year. First, although last year I tied
most of the soap pieces to the
branches, I tied a few to the trunks of
the saplings and instead of leaving a
large loop of twine, I had snugged it
up tightly. In the spring I had found
these trees had grown and the twine
was choking them. This year I tied
soap only to branches and tied it
loosely.
Second, last year I tied one piece
of soap to the lowest branch of a
small tree, leaving it hanging only a
few inches above the ground.
Something ate much of it. This year I
hung all the pieces of soap at least
one foot above ground.
Finally, last year I placed soap in
trees on only one side of the
plantation. This year I treated all four
sides.
Maybe the hunters will scare off
the deer this year. Maybe the soap
will discourage them. Or maybe I
will be lucky and for some reason the
deer will avoid my woodiot. But
whatever I can do to protect the white
pine and black walnut I will do. They
are too valuable to be on a deer's
luncheon menu.0
