The Rural Voice, 1999-11, Page 27through the exhibit area was a "real
saviour" due to the dust, says Carter.
"1 don't think the commodity display
would have made it the week if we
had all the dust."
Though the exhibits were a visi-
tor -favourite, Carter says there are
things he would like to have had
included, but which were not possi-
ble because of the busy time of year.
"I would like to have had miniatures
of barns and the inside of barns on
display in the industrial section," he
says. A miniature of a house interior
could have also been added to the
home section.
Overall, Carter was pleased
with his committees' ability
to show the "true life of
Huron County".
One of the greatest aspects was
having the Canadian tlag from the
Peace Tower flying 60 feet above the
showcase. "It was a meeting place for
everyone," he says. "This was proba-
bly also the last time all the munici-
pal flags of Huron County will fly
together in one place, outdoors."
With the match over and clean-up
nearing completion, Craig, Carter
and McNeil agree there has been a
little bit of withdrawal. However, that
has been eased by restoration work,
final meetings and a due date for
reports set for February.
The general consensus seems to
be one of pride in a job well done
and thanks to the tremendous group
of volunteers who worked so hard
and with great commitment over the
last few years to envision such an
event for Huron County.
When first asked why he agreed to
host such a huge venture, Becker said
it was an honour and privilege to
have an opportunity which few fami-
lies have.
After the years of planning, work
and concessions, Becker still holds
the same opinion. "It is an opportuni-
ty which doesn't come often. Though
there were some sacrifices (falling
behind in the harvest), it was an hon-
our only one family a year gets.
"It was a learning experience and
we really enjoyed it. It will be a
match that all will remember."
With his six video tapes filled
with images of the match, Becker
will be enjoying the "glory on the
faces" for months and years to
come.0
