The Rural Voice, 1999-11, Page 19with today's tight monitoring, agreed
that if many more plants closed it.
could "put processing back 40
years."
As to whether his being a survivor
will mean too much business, he
feels it's unlikely. "The closures will
put more on us, but we lost some hog
farmers last year so it should
balance."
Though certainly the upgrades
have cost, Green offers
cautious praise. "It's tough on
us because we had to make the
changes, but in the Tong -term it will
probably be for the good. If we can
stay in that Tong."
There are those who feel sure they
will. "There's still close to 300
licensed abattoirs owners that will
likely make the transition to full
compliance,"'said Dr. Baker. "It's
hard to predict, but they have
survived for years and will continue
to do so. We shouldn't be overly
pessimistic about the situation. We
are not looking at wide-sprcad
closure.
"I think Ontario will still have a
good network of small-scale
abattoirs."0
