Farm beautification winners honoured
by 1999 Huron IPM committee
Even before the first plow share
slipped into the sod at the 1999
International Plowing Match at
Dashwood, one group of winners had
been honoured.
Ten judges from Master Gardeners
of Ontario judged 113 entries in eight
categories for the Huron County
Beautification Contest. "I don't envy
the task the judges had to do," said
Jane Muegge from the Clinton
OMAFRA office who was MC at the
awards banquet.
Deb and Les Falconer, R.R.5,
Clinton, took first place in the farm
gateway competition with Larry and
Louise Merner, R.R.3, Zurich second
and Amy and Bill Fotheringham,
R.R.4, Seaforth, third.
Raymond and Marie Louise Eisert,
R.R.2, Crediton won the prize for the
most attractive farmstead with Cory
and Leo Sanders, R.R.4, Brussels,
second and Bev and Tom Prout,
Exeter, third.
Cheryl and Eric Freiter, R.R. 1,
Dashwood, took top prize for the most
improved farmstead. Joan and Don
Brodie of Bayfield were second while
Elaine and Howard Datars, R.R. 1,
Dashwood were third.
Hayter's Turkey Products took the
prize for the most attractive
agribusiness. KMM Drainage, R.R.1,
Walton, was second while Vincent
Farm Equipment, Seaforth was third.
Christine and Mike Coulthard,
R.R.5, Goderich had the most
attractive rural home with Dawn and
Bruce Rathwell, R.R.1, Brucefield,
second and Hugh and Kim Burgsma,
R.R.5, Goderich, third.
Other awards were given for most
attractive urban home, most attractive
seasonal cottage and best community
landscape.0
Western Ontario women tops at CNE
Western Ontario's fair ambassadors
proved victorious among the 86
contestants at the 28th anniversary of
the Ambassador of the Fair
competition at the Canadian National
Exhibition in Toronto.
When the winner of the 1999 CNE
Ambassador was chosen she was Perth Furrow
County's Tracy Pfeifer, ambassador of
the Mitchell Fair. She will travel
extensively as new ambassador
promoting Ontario fairs, including the
Ontario Association of Agricultural
Societies Convention, parades, charity
events, fair openings and judging
competitions.
First runner-up was Becky Riehl,
who represented Tavistock Fall Fair.
Second runner-up was Heather
Dietrich, ambassador for the
Mildmay -Carrick Fall Fair in Bruce
County. It's been quite a year for
Heather who earlier was first runner-
up and Miss Congeniality at the Miss
Midwestern Ontario Competition held
in Walkerton.
Contestants in the Ambassador
competition were interviewed to test
their knowledge of agriculture and
world issues. They had previously
submitted resumes to the judging
panel.0
Amy Holmes chosen
Perth Queen of the
Amy Holmes was named the 1999
Queen of the Furrow when the Perth
County Plowing Match was held.
It was the second title of the year
for Holmes who was named Miss
Paddyfest 1999 in Listowel last spring.
She spoke on the topic "Thank God
I'm a country girl".
The new Queen of the Furrow was
crowned by Kelly Robertson of
Atwood, the 1998 Queen of the
Furrow who represented Perth County
at the 1999 IPM in Dashwood.
Runner-up was Joanna Van Bakel,
R.R.1, Dublin.
Elmer Erb was named the grand
champion plowman at the match while
Matt Bertrand was the junior
champion and Ruth Darrington was
the women's champion.0
New Huron
Queen of the
Furrow crowned
Amanda Denys, daughter of
Walter and Nancy Denys of
Kippen was crowned the 1999
Queen of the Furrow at the
Huron County Plowing Match
near Seaforth in late August.
She succeeds Erin
McNaughton the 1998 Queen
of the Furrow who represented
Huron at the 1999 IPM.
Amanda will compete for the
Ontario title at the 2000 match
in Wellington County.
Lynn Lowry retires
Well known Amberley-area
farmers and business owners Lynn
and Gayle Lowry have decided to
retire after 33 years in business.
The couple started their
business in 1966 selling Acorn
stable cleaners from their farrn,
later branching out into many other
lines of equipment. By 1997 their
business, which started out doing
510,000 a year, was grossing $1
million.
The business has been purch-
ased by Ron and Eileen Kleuskens
who will operate as Maitland
Valley Agri Systems Ltd. and will
remain at Amberley at present.0
