Another serious work-related concern is travelling on the job or the commute to and from work. In Huron County and other areas of rural Ontario, we have a special interest at harvest season when farm vehicles are on the roads. The Huron Perth 1999 Safe Harvest Campaign was organized by the Huron Perth Safe Farming_ Coalition. This coalition was formed by members of farming organizations and the Huron Perth Injury Prevention Committee's (HPIPC) .Farr Safety and Traffic Subcommittees. HPIPC was established in 1995. The other two subcommittees are bicycle safety and fails in seniors. Mem'oers include community volunteers, representatives from the District Health Council, health units, Community Care Access, hospitals, farm safety groups, police, media, the Ministry of Transportation and community agencies and businesses. New members are always welcome. The 1999 Safe Harvest Campaign was designed for both farmers and drivers who drive on rural roads. Signs were posted at grain elevators so that farmers could read a safety message while waiting to unload their products. There is also a fact sheet available on farm safety containing information such as that the fine is $375 if the total combined length from front to back (plated farm vehicle and wagon) exceeds 23 metres (75'5"). Examples of additional facts are that any farm plated vehicle without proper lighting that exceeds 2.6 metres in width is eligible for a fine of $275 and that there is a fine ranging from a minimum of $400 to a maximum of $20,000 for any plated farm or commercial motor vehicle that is deemed to be unsafe. For drivers in rural areas, safe harvest slogans are being printed on a number of statements for local businesses and in newsletters for local businesses and agencies. Local newspapers, radio and television have been requested to use the slogans as fillers from July until October. The NOTICE Any OFA member wishing to have a resolution presented at the Annual OFA Convention in November must have it in writing to be presented at the Hurcn County Federation of Agriculture Annual meeting on October 7, 1999. Huron Perth Injury Prevention Committee will have a display at the International Plowing Match which will also feature safe harvest information.
