individual is important to the process,
one person cannot possibly provide

Watch out for
velvetleaf
By John C. Benham
Weed Inspector,
Wellington County
Each year more of the tall
strangers called velvetleaf are
appearing, especially in soybean
fields. It you have a plant that is taller
than the soybeans you should
investigate. It is likely bad news!
An average velvetleaf plant
produces 7,761 seeds. A high
percentage of the seeds remain viable
for up to 50 years. The seed coat
must be fractured before germination
can take place. In my experience
velvetleaf is the smartest weed I have
to deal with.
I plead with producers to take this
warning seriously. If at all possible,
pull these weeds and get them off the
field and destroy them. Put a garbage
bag over the plant, close it just above
the ground and pull the plant and turn
it upside down to catch the seeds.
People have noted streaks of these
plants in fields from where someone
has carried the plant across the field
and seeds dribbled out. Combines are
experts at catching these weeds. If
you can keep your property free of
this weed your life in future will be
much simpler.0
