just found on the plowing match
property or on a few surrounding
farms. As visitors drive to the match.
flowers are blooming, front lawns are
trimmed and properties are getting
spruced up for miles around.
Becker is thrilled to see so much
enthusiasm for the match.
"Everyone is doing the little
things to make it better. We are
showing our community to the
public."
As the day draws nearer, even
the traffic down Hay Twp.
Concession 12-13 has
increased.
"We started noticing a difference
since July I," says Becker, "but there
has been even more (in August)."
Another aspect to Huron Shines is
the use of the internet. This was the
first match were tickets could be pre -
ordered via the internet and Becker
says he has friends in Australia who
will be following the match on-line.
"The internet is helping keep
people abreast of what is going on,"
he says.
Becker seems to be taking the
bustling preparations all around him
in stride. He calmly tells how 40 city
blocks will emerge in just a few
weeks and hundreds of trailer sites
have already been booked.
It was only when the hydro poles
started going up that he really began
to feel the excitement, he says.
For the Beckers, the combination
of community pride and teamwork
will make the 1999 International
Plowing Match a memorable
occasion.
"There will be memories that will
live forever. The next generation will
be told about this great event."0
