credits the Plowmens' Association
and their many committee member
volunteers, the county and township,
organizations from near and far,
neighbouring municipalities,
neighbours, friends and spouses who
have all shared the task and
contributed to the endeavour.
Not wanting to miss a single
group or individual who added
something to the match, Becker
points out how spouses, not officially
part of the planning, play a huge role
in its success.
"It is the spouses who are home
taking messages, answering
questions and phone calls while
committee members are at meetings.
It couldn't be done without them."
The willingness of his rural
neighbours and those in the nearby
villages to make the IPM go has been
great, he says. "They too feel this is a
privilege."
Pulling together such a large event
takes many hands and Becker says
the team work has been tremendous.
Communication has been the key.
Aside from the pride of hosting
the match, Becker says he has made a
lot of new friends.
People stop in almost every day
either because they need an answer to
something or they are just curious
about what is going on in the field,
he say,W.
hen asked what hosting the
match has done to change
his life, his instant
response, with a chuckle, is, "I have
grown more hay this year than ever
before. I sold all the first cutting and
now I am in the hay business."
He seeded down the tented city
two years ago, then the trailer park
last year.
Along with his preparation of the
ground, Becker says the committee
knew last year where Celebration
Square would be and this spring they
began to map out were the plowing
and parking would take place.
By July, the layouts for hydro
service, water and roadways was
determined.
Local tug-of-war teams donated
their time on a Saturday to set up
more than 20,000 feet of snow
fencing to mark the perimeter of
several areas.
