Only one family is chosen each year." Even before he officially agreed to be a candidate, Becker talked to his neighbours. "They are very important," he said. With other districts in Huron County competing with Becker and the Dashwood group for the honour to host the plowing match it was not until months later that he heard the news. The announcement came just before the Huron County Plowing Match in Dungannon, in August, 1995. After lengthy discussions by the association's executive, Becker's site was chosen as Huron County's candidate for the IPM. The family was called at 11:45 p.m. on August 23. However, work still had to be done as the Huron location had to be selected for the 1999 match over any other counties seeking to host the event. The job of winning the IPM was made easier when no other counties stepped forward. Once the final decision was made, Becker says he began to realize the challenge, the thrill and the great opportunity for both his community and Huron County to show the rest of the province and visitors from abroad what the region has to offer.
