A year on fast forward
The mail recently has only
confirmed my theory that everything
this year is on fast forward.
At least half of yesterday's mail
consisted of fall bulb catalogues and
items to order
for the
Christmas
season. I
grumbled away
as I was sorting
through the
stuff and
remarked to
Super Wrench
that wasn't it a
little weird to be
able to order
Christmas cards
in August, but
be unable to
find one pair of
shorts left in my size in any
surrounding store. Mittens ... yes, a
cool summer top ... good luck!
Everything is going too fast. I
complained. The beans were all ready
at the same time, most of the fall
perennials have finished blooming
and I swear the birds are flocking
already to head elsewhere. Super
Wrench just shrugged and came forth
with one of his cute little gems of
wisdom.
Life, he stated, is like a roll of
toilet paper. The closer you get to the
end, the faster it goes. A fat lot of
comfort that was.
Maybe it is an age-related thing,
but I disagree. I think we're hung up
on everything being fast.
A new Tim Horton's just opened
up nearby and on opening day, most
of the customers used the drive-thru.
Whatever happened to a leisurely
chat with a buddy over a good cup of
coffee, while actually sitting down on
that well -upholstered part of you
especially made for that purpose?
Hospitals are great believers in the
fast track. I'm sure a drive-thru
window, especially for common
things like colds and births is in the
offing. For more complicated health
problems like a tonsillectomy or a
triple bypass, they'll likely have
prepackaged kits so you can do it
yourself.
Our cars as well as our food had
better be fast or we don't want them.
If it doesn't fit in the microwave, it's
left in the store. Even the traditional
method of communicating with
others by mail isn't fast enough.
People are affronted if you don't have
e-mail, a fax machine or don't use
express or priority post to do business
with them. Better yet, use the courier
system that guarantees "fast" results.
If you're still not convinced that
fast is rapidly becoming a dangerous
addiction. put a slow moving vehicle
sign on your car and drive at horse
and buggy speed on the 401. They'll
likely shoot you before you can get
pulled over by the MTO.
Being really fast is an advantage if
you're an Olympic hopeful but a real
detriment if you're unrolling the
toilet roll of life.0
