like a guide to visitors, leading them
from one area of the garden to
another.
You also have a choice of where
in the world you want your garden to
take you. Effective use of wrought
iron railing, terracotta pots and herbs
takes you to a warm Mediterranean
spot. Thick green hedges sheltering
foxglove and delphiniums outlined
with gravel paths puts you in an
English garden.
Garden ornaments have the power
to direct your eye to spots in the
garden and away from Claws. You
can give your garden the appearance
of depth, of greater or smaller size.
When I received a lovely statue for
my birthday I wanted to put it on the
edge of the patio so I could enjoy it
every day. But we finally decided to
place her on a cement pad down
under the lilac bushes with a swath of
ground cover around her feet. You
don't notice her right away. She
appears to be hiding at first. You see
Gardening
her from the corner of your eye. She
draws you out to the front lawn and
points you to the bench on the back
side of a low wall.
Ornaments are like traffic signs,
they tell us when to stop and take
another look or when to travel on.
They also have to be in proportion to
their surroundings. Over -large
ornaments can strike a sour visual
chord just as quickly as an
undersized. Like any art form if you
like it, if it makes you feel good, then
it is a good thing.
But not all ornaments are solitary,
expensive statues. There are also
working ornaments like water pumps,
a scarecrow standing among the
vegetables or a lovely row of bean
pole tripods. Beauty is in the eye of
the beholder and the same is doubly
true in a garden. Is an ornament
framed with plants or nestled down
among them? Your ornaments may
be a path of unusual stone that winds
from one area to another. Keep in

mind that whatever you put in your
garden it should blend in or mimic
its surroundings. You want it to be
part of the garden not a madcap
visitor.
So let's recap some basic ideas.
Garden ornaments can offer structure
in the garden, set the garden in a time
period. give the garden a particular
feeling or ambiance, draw our eye to
favourite spots and away from others
as well as direct traffic Clow from one
garden area to another. And finally
garden ornaments should give you
pleasure, recap and elicit wonderful
thoughts and feelings from you.
Whether is it a collection of stone
from the beach or a gnome from the
hardware store. the pleasure and joy
of seeing it in your garden is what
makes you smile and enjoy
everything more.0
