Ozone treatment
reduces disease
Bacteria levels in poultry barns
can be cut by using ozone treat-
ments, preliminary research at the
University of Saskatchewan has
found.
Al Finney, of Environ
Environmental Inc., said airborne
bacteria levels dropped by 44 per
cent in barns where ozone
generators were used last summer.
"We weren't expecting such a
great reduction," he said.
The research was conducted by
the university and the Regina
company to determine the effect
ozonation would have on poultry
body weight and feed consump-
tion and to monitor ammonia and
microbial levels.
Ozone is a gas used to control
odour. It works by oxidizing, or
breaking down, organic
substances into base compounds,
which causes odours to disappear.
Amounts must be closely
regulated because high levels of
ozone can be dangerous for
animals and people.
Because the tests were
conducted in the summer when
the barns at the university were
well ventilated, there was no
effect on feed consumption, body
weight or ammonia levels. How-
ever, there was a noteworthy red-
uction in airbome microorganisms.
"This result was interesting
and requires confirmation in larger
scale experiments," said Henry
Classen, professor of poultry
management and nutrition.
Ozone works so well to
destroy bacteria because it
actually breaks down cell walls,
Finney said. "Bacteria can't
develop a resistance to ozone."
When ozone was used in
commercial barns near Regina one
barn had two consecutive negative
tests for salmonella.
Finney said his company hopes
to work with hog producers to test
the technology.0
