MPs told pork board
undermined by Farm
Products Marketing
Commission
Pork farmers must get their act
together and speak with a united
voice, Bruce MPP Barb Fisher told
farmers attending the Members of
Parliament Dinner of the Bruce
County Federation of Agriculture.
Fisher said pork producers are too
divided in their views on the future
of the industry and they have to
develop a common position.
Her comments followed concerns
expressed by Murray Calder, MP for
Wellington-Grey-Dufferin-Simcoe, a
former pork producer who turned to

the role of the Farm Products
Marketing Commission," Ken Kelly,
vice-president of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture told the
members.
Andy Ernewein, a director of the
pork board agreed, saying three years
ago the Commission; after a
presentation by a Targe packer,
required the pork board to allow one-
on-one negotiations between packers
and producers and said Ontario Pork
had the right to refuse packer -
producer contacts but with very
limited reasons.
"I'm very disappointed with the
Farm Products Marketing
Commission," Ernewein said. The
only route for the pork board to go,
he said, is to challenge the
commission.
But Fisher came back to the need
for unity among producers saying the
only way for pork producers to
pressure the commission would be to
speak with a united voice.
An angry Ernewein said the rules
set by the commission had cost pork
